Let me start by saying I thoroughly enjoyed this work. It leaves a lasting impression. The answer to whether I’d want to know more about the person who wrote it is an unequivocal yes. This collection offers a vulnerable peek into your hidden self, perhaps even your forbidden self. It reveals an inner spectrum, a kind of metaphysical exoskeleton, your undoing laid bare beneath the unknown.
“Ignliv with YdsLexya” completely pulled me in, reminiscent of A Beautiful Mind, where you’re drawn into the illness without realizing it. It echoes the essence of Reflection Perfection, the way perfection both drives and dismantles us.
This intimate, deeply personal bio-narrative makes you both writer and reader in a way that never feels stylized or condescending. It opens a door wide enough to enter the whole of a life. There is a bioluminescence to the autobiographical rendering of these poems, a glow that draws you into their dark, joyful, tragic essence. On one level, the collection reads like a mini MFA syllabus. I could absolutely see it used to teach narrative prose and poetry, or to spark deeply personal conversations.
I hesitated at first when I saw the length, wondering about reading such a long poetry book, but I quickly realized the journey was essential. I’m glad I stayed with it. The forward motion, despite setbacks and staggering obstacles, is nothing short of life-affirming.
It made me reflect on my own life. In that way, it felt like reading the work of a friend, or someone I would want to call a friend. The imagery invited my own memories to resurface, especially in Memories of an Inner Child and Who Are We. As I read, I could hear Jennifer Thomas’s piano solo “Oceans” playing in my mind.
The guided reflections are a brilliant and rare addition. They expand the interpretive space, allowing the reader to go deeper without demanding any fixed conclusion. They gently answer the dreaded, deadening question, “But what did you mean?” These sections educate while they elevate. I hope you keep them.
The nonlinear lattice of memory and legacy invites you to continue reading. The visuals are strong, intimate, and open-ended, just detailed enough to make you want to reach through the page and speak to the writer.
What amazed me most is how you carry your journey, not bruised, bitter, or broken, but supported and strengthened by it. It has truly been a joy and a pleasure to spend time with this work. I’m glad I volunteered to read it.

Full disclosure, I became a friend of the author through a member of her family I am also friends with. But she charged me for the book so you’ll get an honest opinion from me (lol).
I’m not normally the type of guy to read poetry. I like sci-fi and Stephen King, etc. I’m not the typical audience for this. That being said, I enjoyed this book from my first read through. A lot of poems just resonated with me. I found myself as having had these feelings and experiences too. I connected with the emotions evoked. I loved to be able to express myself in a way others could understand as this author does. It’s like she took off all the social armor we put on ourselves to protect us from the world and exposed herself, made herself naked for all to see those precious vulnerable parts of her. We in turn recognize those aspects in ourselves, the things we normally protect and hide because they make susceptible to being hurt. It was intimate and personal. And because it was that it was daring and brave to put herself out there like this for everyone to see.
And it wasn’t just me who felt this. One night I was reading in the yard of one of my favorite pubs and started commenting out loud as I came across portions that hit me, talking to myself, which got some of the other people in the yard curious. When I read a few passages aloud, they had similar reactions.
Like the poem connections in here, your iris will want to swim through the pages of this book and have these literary sensations imprinted on your retinas. And for a guy like me who isn’t used to this type of literature I found the afterword for each piece and reflections really expanded the experience.
If someone like myself, the not so typical audience had this much enjoyment, I can only imagine how much more exponential it would be for the normal consumer of this genre.

Thank you. Truly. This means more to me than I can properly put into words. The fact that you do not normally read poetry makes your experience with Beneath the Surface even more meaningful. I wrote this book hoping it could reach beyond labels and genres and simply meet people wherever they are human.
What you wrote about taking off our social armor moved me deeply. My therapist, Dr. G., said the same thing. That was the goal: to allow myself to be truly seen and, through that vulnerability, invite others to do the same. Knowing that you saw yourself in these pages, and that even the people around you connected when you read passages aloud, is more than I could have hoped for.
Thank you for reading it with such openness, for understanding the purpose of the reflections, and for seeing not only the poems, but me, the human being behind them.
